UNIC Tehran celebrates International Youth day

Participants at a ceremony celebrating International Youth Day In observance of International Youth Day, 12 August, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Tehran, in cooperation with the Merited Youth Society of Iran, organized a ceremony in the Mehr Garden of Shiraz.  The participants included teachers and members of non-governmental organizations.  The Secretary-General's statement for International Youth Day was distributed to the audience.

UNIC Dhaka celebrates International Youth Day

Youth receive plants at International Youth Day commemorationIn observance of International Youth Day, 12 August, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Dhaka and the Youth Hobby Development Society jointly organized a discussion programme and video screening at Jhenidah district approximately 250 km outside  of Dhaka. The UNIC Officer-in-Charge was the key note speaker. Other speakers included the principal of a local college, president of the Jhenidah press club, a district youth officer and non-governmental organization leaders. The UNIC Library Assistant read the Secretary-General’s message for International Youth Day. The discussion programme was followed by a question and answer session. Three videos on United Nations activities were also screened for the audience.
 
To emphasize the theme of International Youth Day  – "Youth and climate change: time for action" – some 130 plants were distributed to the participants.

UNIC Bogota celebrates International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

On 11 August UN Information Centre (UNIC) Bogota, together with National Organization of Indigenous People (ONIC), organized a press conference with representatives from the Los Pastos, Cauca, Siona and Betoyes indigenous tribes.
 
The press conference was also attended by the president of ONIC, the UN Resident Representative, the UNIC director, a representative from the International Organization for Migration and a representative from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
 
The press conference served as a way to bring awareness to the fact that there are 25 tribes at high risk of extinction.

UNIS Vienna co-organizes commemorative event on the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945

The UNIS Non-governmental Organization (NGO) Service, in cooperation with the Vienna NGO Committee on Peace, organized a memorial event to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The event took place on Friday, 8 August 2008, at the Vienna International Centre.

Mr. Christian Strohmann of UNIS Vienna addressed the audience of well over 150 people. He reflected on this day of remembrance and the spoke of the commitment of UN staff to reaffirm the pledge that the horrors experienced by the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 will never be repeated. He expressed the hope for a nuclear weapon free world and the challenge to make the world safer for future generations. Mr. Strohmann also quoted from the message of the Secretary-General and made reference to the upcoming International Day of Peace on 21 September.

Mr. Tariq Rauf, Deputy Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), spoke on behalf of his organization and stressed the IAEA's work on the issue of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation was a matter of great priority. Mr. Klaus Renoldner, speaking on behalf of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, expressed his views on the threat of nuclear weapons to mankind and the how his organization strives to prevent nuclear war.

Following the speeches was an impressive dance performance by the Japanese dancer Kazuko Kurosaki inside the fountain on the Memorial Plaza of the Vienna Iinformation Centre.  At the end of the performance, the audience was invited to ring the Peace Bell.
