Millennium Development Goals 2008 Report workshop for journalists held in UNIC Yaounde

On 30 September, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Yaounde together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a one day workshop for 40 media professionals at the UNIC premises.

The objective of the workshop was to highlight key aspects of the Millennium Development Goals 2008 Report. UNIC's National Information Officer was the facilitator of the training session and the session covered topics such as presentation of the MDGs, key messages and challenges and communication about and reporting of the MDGs. The workshop ended with group work sessions during which media action plans were developed.

The Acting Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Cameroon spoke to the participants before and after the training session, emphasizing the important role the media has to play in assisting the achievement of the MDGs in Cameroon by 2015. She called on the trainees to become “Ambassadors of MDGs” by putting into practice the knowledge gained during the training.

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Canberra together with Make Poverty History, a coalition of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), held a "Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty" event on 25 September. 400 people attended the event which also served as the forum for the launch of the Millennium Development Goals Report 2008. The UNIC's Acting Director spoke to the participants who stood up to voice their support for reducing poverty. In addition, UNIC Canberra distributed Stand Up kits to all public schools in Australia encouraging students to participate in Stand Up events in their schools.

Together with other UN agencies operating in Cameroon, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Yaounde held an official ceremony on 24 September at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel to launch the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2008 Report.

Over 100 people attended the event, including Government officials, heads of UN agencies, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and journalists. Speakers included the Minister Delegate at the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development (MINEPAT), the Acting UN Resident Coordinator for Cameroon, and a representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The speakers highlighted aspects of the report related to sub-Saharan Africa and Cameroon and reconfirmed Cameroon's commitment to the achievement of the goals. Attendees received a press kit with materials about the report and the related high level event taking place in New York on 25 September in addition to copies of the Millennium Development Goals 2008 Report.

The Acting Director of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Canberra launched the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 2008 Report on 24 September 2008 in Sydney. The MDG report launch was part of the event entitled "Call to Action on the MDGs" organised in collaboration with the Make Poverty History Coalition.

The Sydney "Call to Action" event coincided with the United Nation's Millennium Campaign's global "Call to Action" and the Secretary-General's High-level Summit on Millennium Development Goals in New York.

The event was attended by non-governmental organizations, film and television personalities, government and embassy representatives and the media. 
Additionally, the television advertisement "Stand Up and Take Action 2008",  featuring well known Australian entertainer, Missy Higgins, was launched as a lead up to the International Day of the Eradication of Poverty and the Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty Campaign.
