On his first official visit to India on 30-31 October, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with senior government officials including the President of India Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

He delivered the ninth Rajiv Gandhi Memorial lecture entitled "India and the UN: An Indispensable Partnership" organized by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) New Delhi and chaired by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.

At an event hosted by Nobel Laureate Dr. R. K. Pachauri, Mr. Ban addressed corporate business leaders of the World Business Council on the importance of creative strategies to fight climate change and promote sustainable development. The Secretary-General, accompanied by Mrs. Ban, also visited Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos organized several school visits during the month of October to celebrate UN Day. UNIC staff briefed students on the work of the UN System around the world and in Nigeria and gave presentations about the UN website and Cyberschoolbus. Students also viewed films about the United Nations and received a variety of information materials related to the UN and its work.

In addition, on 30 October the UNIC Director spoke about the United Nations, the empowerment of women and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at a “UN Day Celebration” meeting of the Lagos chapter of the Zonta Club International, a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

On 31 October, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Ankara organized a conference at Tevfik Fikret High School. A representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) briefed 300 students on the UN and its activities. This was the first UN event organized at Tevfik Fikret High School.

Estudiantes del Colegio Peruano Alemán Alexander Von Humboldt participaron este jueves 30 de octubre en el el I Modelo ONU organizado por el Centro de Información de las Naciones Unidas (CINU). Esta actividad es una simulación del sistema de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en la cual los estudiantes asumen los roles de delegados de los diferentes países miembros de la organización y debaten diversos problemas del mundo que conforman la agenda de las Naciones Unidas. En este caso, el tema de debate fue el calentamiento global.

Las palabras iniciales estuvieron a cargo del Director General del colegio, Albrecht Schmidt, quien destacó la importancia de esta experiencia para el desarrollo de los alumnos y las alumnas y se comprometió a continuar apoyando este tipo de experiencias en los años venideros. Por su parte, Jorge Chediek, Coordinador Residente del Sistema de las Naciones Unidas en el Perú, hizo un recorrido por la historia de las Naciones Unidas y mostró su complacencia porque estudiantes peruanos decidan abordar la experiencia de un Modelo ONU, que les permitirá desarrollar sus destrezas en el debate y la negociación. “Los resultados los podremos enviar a la Asamblea General de la ONU”, dijo Chediek, “como un aporte de ustedes al gran debate que se desarrolla sobre el tema del cambio climático”.

La alumna Adriana Bickel se desempeñó como Presidenta de la Asamblea General, la Moderadora fue Alessandra Rojas y el rol de Oficial de Conferencias estuvo a cargo de  Sophie von Bischoffshausen. Diego Salama, practicante del CINU, quien trae la experiencia de haber participado en numerosos Modelos ONU en su país natal, Bolivia, fue quien se encargó de la capacitación de los participantes y la organización general de este modelo. La clausura estuvo a cargo de Inés Scudellari, Oficial de Información del Centro de Información de las Naciones Unidas para el Perú.
