UNIC Cairo holds media briefing on upcoming Financing for Development conference in Doha
On 25 November, 2008 the United Nations Information Center in Cairo dedicated its monthly media briefing to the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus, to be held in the Qatari capital, Doha, from November 29 to December 2.
Mr. Fethi Debbabi, Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Information Center in Cairo, said the Doha conference, which comes six years after the adoption of the Monterrey Consensus, will provide an opportunity to assess the implementation of the six-part Financing for Development agenda as well as emerging issues and to identify measures to be taken to enhance financial support for development in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Mr. Debbabi pointed out that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed his resolve to ensure that the interests and well being of the most vulnerable nations will be fully heard by world leaders during the Doha Conference and that the global financial crisis can not be an excuse for not delivering on commitments to the Millennium Development Goals, to financing for development and to addressing climate change and the global food crisis.
It is expected that the Doha conference will re-emphasize the goals and commitments of the Monterrey Consensus and discuss mobilization of domestic and international financial resources for development and ways of strengthening the capacities of developing countries in this area. Also the issues of international trade as an engine for development will be emphasized as well as the importance of establishing an open, multilateral and non-discriminatory trading system that could enable products and services from developing countries to reach international markets. The Doha conference will also discuss debt issues and increasing of financial and technical cooperation for development in addition to the effectiveness of the global monetary financial systems and strengthening their cohesion in support of development.
