O Diretor Adjunto do Departamento de ONGs do ECOSOC fala sobre os avanços na implementação dos ODMs no mundo

No dia 31 de março, foi organizado, no auditório do Palácio Itamaraty do Rio de Janeiro, o VI Fórum Intersetorial Rede Sociedade Solidária, organizado pela Legião da Boa Vontade (LBV) com a colaboração do Departamento de Assuntos Econômicos e Sociais das Nações Unidas (DESA) e do Centro de Informação das Nações Unidas para o Brasil (UNIC Rio). O lema do Fórum neste ano — que ainda deve acontecer na Argentina, Bolívia, Paraguai e Uruguai — é “Saúde e qualidade de vida: cumprindo os oito Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio (ODMs)”, uma série de metas traçadas pela ONU que devem ser atingidas até 2015.

A Representante do Centro de Informação das Nações Unidas, Valéria Schilling, foi convidada a falar na abertura do evento. Para ela, a filantropia é muito importante no combate à extrema pobreza e à fome. “A cooperação entre governos, sociedade civil e terceiro setor é essencial”, disse Schilling citando o Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas, Ban Ki-moon. Ela disse que a crise financeira internacional tem prejudicado os financiamentos públicos e privados para os projetos das Nações Unidas e lembrou que a maioria dos ODMs está relacionada à questão da saúde, já que a extrema pobreza costuma vir acompanhada de outros problemas.

Também esteve presente o Chefe em Exercício da Seção de ONGs do DESA, Joop Theunissen. Ele agradeceu a presença dos representantes da Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro e enfatizou a importância dos ODMs número quatro, cinco e seis — reduzir a mortalidade infantil, melhorar a saúde materna e combater o HIV/aids —, além de parabenizar a atuação do Brasil no auxílio aos soropositivos e no combate à epidemia. Ele também falou dos efeitos da crise econômica. Embora a situação do Brasil seja
relativamente melhor no contexto internacional, ele lembrou que a crise alimentar pode ser agravada e  que a África será muito afetada.

O evento contou com a presença de representantes do terceiro-setor, que traçaram um panorama geral da questão da saúde. Sobre o Estado do Rio de Janeiro, o Sub-Secretário de Atenção Primária, Vigilância e Promoção da Saúde, Daniel Loranz, culpou a gestão anterior pela situação precária da rede pública de hospitais. A questão da tuberculose foi levantada pelo representante do Fórum Estadual das ONGs na Luta contra a Tuberculose, Carlos Basília. Ele disse que uma em cada três pessoas já teve contato com o bacilo causador da doença e que há 80 mil novos casos por ano. Basília lembrou que a maioria dos infectados são homens pobres responsáveis pelo sustento da família. A doença, para ele, teria relação com o agravamento da pobreza e seria um obstáculo na conquista dos ODMs.

Também participaram do debate — que reuniu cerca de 100 convidados — o Secretário Executivo do Fórum ONG/aids, William Amaral, a Coordenadora Executiva do Centro de Promoção da Saúde (CEDAPS) e o integrante do Núcleo Executivo da Articulação Nacional de Movimentos e Práticas de Educação Popular e Saúde do Rio de Janeiro, Márcio Villard.

Women and girls participate in run on International Women's Day 2009 in Port of Spain

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Port of Spain mounted an International Women's Day exhibit in the College of Science Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) cafeteria from 3 to 20 March 2009. This year's theme for International Women's Day was “Women and men unite to end violence against women”, which is part of a year long campaign launched by the UN Secretary-General to end violence against women.

The exhibit included recent UN publications on women, gender and human rights. Other activities that continued the observance throughout the month of March included a Ministry of Community Development and Gender Affairs sports day for women and girls, which was attended by the Director of UNIC Port of Spain, who read the UN Secretary-General's message for International Women's Day before the mini marathon run.

The Ministry also launched a year long campaign on fighting violence against women in partnership with the UN System in Trinidad and Tobago.

Finally, a Take Back the Night march and rally on the University of the West Indies campus in St. Augustine, Trinidad on 13 March 2009 was organised by the UWI activist group, Consciousness Raising and was attended by the National Information Officer from UNIC Port of Spain.

Representatives of Azerbaijani NGOs at briefing session at the UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan

The UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan, in close cooperation with the National NGO Forum, facilitated a gathering for national non-governmental organizations (NGOs), bringing together representatives of twenty five national NGOs on 30 March 2009.

UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan's representative, Envera Selimovic, greeted the participants and expressed her hope for more efficient cooperation in the future. “We have successfully cooperated with the National NGO Forum for a long time, but I do believe that there is room for improvement. With this meeting we hope to boost our joint activities and encourage more NGOs to associate with the Department of Public Information (DPI). ”

The screening of two documentaries followed.  The first screening was of "2008 Year in Review," a summary of the work of the UN worldwide in 2008. The second screening was "Tell the World," an introduction to the functions of the UN's Department of Public Information. Additional information about the UN's role, structure and association with DPI was provided by UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan's Public Information Associate.

The UN DPI Office in Azerbaijan plans to organize similar briefings in the future to help develop closer cooperation with the NGO community in Azerbaijan.

UNIC Ankara's Information Officer briefs students on the work of the United Nations
