El pasado sábado 15 de noviembre, jóvenes estudiantes de primero y segundo de secundaria de los colegios  Jorge Cieza Lachos, Santa Rosa del Sauce, Martín Esquicha Bernedo y José María Arguedas participaron en un concurso de pintura con motivo del Año Internacional de la Papa. Todos ellos, miembros de los Clubes  de Amigos de la ONU, trabajaron libremente con técnicas de pintura con crayones a fin de lograr los primeros lugares. El Club Amigos de la ONU es una red de estudiantes que trabaja de manera voluntaria temas que forman parte de los objetivos de las Naciones Unidas y fue creada por el Centro de Información de las Naciones Unidas del Perú (CINU) hace 13 años.

El CINU, el Centro Internacional de la Papa (CIP) y la Muncipalidad de San Isidro organizaron este concurso que se llevó a cabo en la Plazuela del Bosque El Olivar, en San Isidro. Su finalidad fue crear conciencia en los estudiantes acerca de la importancia de la papa como elemento nutricional que ayudó a reducir las hambrunas que afectaban periódicamente a Europa y que puede contribuir hoy en día a reducir el hambre en el mundo. 

Los premios fueron entregados por el Alcalde de San Isidro, E. Antonio Meier, y su esposa Gladys Zender de Meier. Los ganadores fueron los siguientes: Primer Puesto: Andrea Martínez Reátegui, del Colegio Jorge Cieza Lachos; Segundo Puesto: Fernando Del Mar Llontop, del Colegio Jorge Cieza Lachos; y Tercer Puesto: Mireya Luna Huamaní, del Colegio José María Arguedas. Además hubo cinco menciones honrosa: Marisol Arias Mansilla, del Colegio José María Arguedas; María Alexandra Chirinos, del Colegio Martín Esquicha  Bernedo; Juan Carlos Nina Verástegui, del Colegio Jorge Cieza Lachos; Alexis Jesús Vásquez Díaz, del Colegio Jorge Cieza Lachos; y José Josua Ortiz Aliaga, del Colegio Martín Esquicha  Bernedo.

El jurado estuvo conformado por Katherine Muller-Marín, Representante de la UNESCO en el Perú; Marilú Ponte, Curadora de Arte y Coordinadora de Eventos Culturales de la Municipalidad de San Isidro; Fiorella Gallia, del Centro Internacional de la Papa; Francisco Guerra-García, artista plástico; y María Inés Scudellari, Oficial de Información del Centro de Información de las Naciones Unidas en el Perú.

Esta actividad contó con el auspicio de Faber Castell, Lay’s, Tai Loy y la colaboración del Ministerio de Agricultura.

The Friends of the UN Club from Chiclayo, 763 kilometers north of Lima, Peru, celebrated International Year of the Potato with a gastronomic festival, which took place on 18 July. The event was organized by participants from numerous schools and the Señor de Sipan University.  The activity was led by the Friends of the UN Club coordinator in the north of Peru, Mag. Susana Toso.

During the festival, the participants demonstrated their skills by creating typical Peruvian dishes using the potato as a basic ingredient. Some dishes were presented in the form of the UN logo, others used figures from the pre-Columbian Moche Culture to showcase the culinary skills and creativity of the participants.

The Friends of the UN Club is a network of voluntary associations created by UNIC Lima, Peru, for students interested in the work of the United Nations, global problems, and development issues.

On 6 June, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Bucharest, in partnership with the Embassy of Peru and the Institute of Food Bioresources, organized a presentation for 25 high school students and their teachers on the International Year of the Potato. The 
objective of the event was to increase awareness among youngsters on the importance of the potato as a natural resource and food.

The consul of the Embassy of Peru talked about the importance of the potato in Latin America in general and Peru in particular and about different types of potatoes. He also provided some figures related to potato production. The “expert voice” was the head of the laboratory of the Institute of Food Bioresources. The Embassy of Peru invited all attendees to sample a traditional Peruvian potato dish, thus offering a tasty and healthy testimony of the potato’s importance.

On 8 May International Year of the Potato was launched at Parliament House, South Australia. The South Australian Agriculture Minister spoke at the launch and discussed the importance of the potato in the global food system. He welcomed the United Nation's initiative to raise awareness of the potato's importance as a staple food and to promote development of sustainable potato-based systems. The winning entry in a painting competition organized by the United Nations Information Centre in Canberra to mark International Year of the Potato was presented to the Agriculture Minister.
