UN Day in Greece

To celebrate UN Day in Greece, the traditional UN Day ceremonies - the Greek and UN flag raising at the Parthenon, and the wreath-laying at the Syntagma Square, took place on the 24 October. Government officials and UN staff members attended the two events. UN Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels was represented by the Desk Officer for Greece and Cyprus. For the second year running, the Athens Metro promoted UN Day by screening the Greek "UN4U" poster from the video monitors in the Metro’s stations.

UNRIC was also present at four high-schools in Athens and Lefkada where the desk officer  briefed more than 600 students on how the UN makes a difference in our everyday lives. The Secretary-General’s UN Day message was delivered in Greek and UN information material was distributed to the participants of the UN4U events. This year’s 14th Deutsche Schule Athens MUN (DSAMUN) was also organized around UN Day for 400 university students.

UNIC Dhaka: UN Day Celebration 2011 - Seminar and Cultural Programme

The UN Country Team in Bangladesh in cooperation with the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Dhaka celebrated UN Day 2011 at the Radisson Hotel on 24 October 2011. The Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhit spoke on the occasion as chief guest, while former Adviser to the Caretaker Government Rasheda K. Chowdhury was the guest of honor. The Director-General (United Nations) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Saida Muna Tasneem attended the function as a special guest. The UN Resident Coordinator Neal Walker and UNIC Officer-in-Charge Kazi Ali Reza also spoke at the event. A painting by eminent artist Monirul Islam, was presented to the chief guest. The event was concluded with a colorful cultural show, devoted to the 150th birth Anniversary of Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore, performed by UN staff members and the renowned singer Shama Rahman.

Talk on “The United Nations – In Everyone’s Interest”

UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Washington Director Will Davis spoke at a UN Day celebration hosted by the Southern Oregon Chapter of the UN Association of the USA.  Director Davis spoke on the theme of “The United Nations – In Everyone’s Interest” to an audience of roughly 100 people on the campus of Southern Oregon University, in Ashland, OR.  The audience consisted of members of the UN Association, faculty and students from the university, and representatives from the local community.  During the question and answer session, issues raised included how the UN is addressing climate change, and the UN’s role in helping its member states deal with immigration.  In advance of his speech, Director Davis was interviewed on the local National Public Radio Station. 

UN Day in Italy

In Italy, on 23 October there was an Open Day at the United Nations Campus in Turin with the theme “Your UN: Turin for the UN”. Directors and other representatives of the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and the United Nations System Staff College welcomed visitors inside the gates.

A series of activities took place at the Piemonte Conference Centre, while the largest UN flag in the world was displayed at the entrance to the campus. Activities included:
•Stands run by the main UN institutions, with information material and gadgets for each organization;
•Brief presentations of the UN bodies activities and their work;
•Creative activities in which the public drew or wrote messages for the UN (words and drawings will be collected and sent as an e-publication to UN HQ in New York);
•A panel discussion among the UN organizations’ directors together with the Mayor of Turin and other local personalities;
•A three-way football match: Turin v. UN v. Rest of the World.

In addition, Fabrica – Benetton’s creative branch celebrated UN Day by broadcasting a 2-minute video clip on the MDGs in five of its most prestigious flagship stores, in Shanghai, Barcelona, Munich, Moscow and Milan. In the Piazza del Duomo at the very heart of Milan, the shop windows contained four mega-screens (each of them 3.5 x 5m) where the video was shown in a loop.
