Students participate in Model UN conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan

On 25 November 2008 a Model UN conference took place at the UN House in Almaty. The theme of the conference was nuclear disarmament and Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”

Approximately 120 students from universities throughout Kazakhstan and an international student organization took part in the Model UN conference, which is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral bodies.

United Nations information office (UNO) in Almaty together with several partners organized a series of events to commemorate UN Day 2008. The first event on 21 October was a lecture at Kazakh University in Almaty. Several short films about United Nations activities were screened for more than 70 students and educators.

The second event held in Astana on 22 October celebrated the 15 year partnership between the United Nations and Kazakhstan and the close cooperation between the UN in Kazakhstan and the Eurasian National University in Astana.

The third event, a presentation entitled "The 2007 Millennium Development Goals for Kazakhstan," was held on 24 October and was organized jointly with the Kazakhstan Institute for the Strategic Studies.
