United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Brazzaville, in partnership with the "Parliament of the Children" and the Federation for Universal Peace, organized a "Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty" event on 17 October.  The event took place at Pierre Mayindou Elementary School in Mfilou (in the southern part of Brazzaville). 400 pupils, ages 6 -12 years old participated in the event.

Le Centre d’information des Nations Unies à Brazzaville a organisé, le 19 septembre 2008, une matinée spéciale au cours de laquelle des citoyens congolais dont des jeunes gens, élèves, étudiants et membres des organisations non gouvernementales ont participé à la campagne mondiale « Ecrire un message pour la paix ».

Cette campagne s’est inscrite dans le cadre la Journée internationale de la paix, célébrée le 21 septembre de chaque année. Elle a consisté à rédiger et envoyer des messages sur la paix sur le site web www.peaceday2008.org établi par l’ONU pour recueillir les différents messages et emails du monde entier.

A l’initiative de l’ONU, cette activité visait à collecter, sous forme d’email ou de sms, des messages sur la paix qui seront exposés au Siège de l’ONU, puis remis aux dirigeants du monde lors de la 63ème session de l’Assemblée Générale, le 23 septembre prochain à New York.

A cette occasion, M. Ban Ki-moon, Secrétaire général de l’ONU a présidé une cérémonie au Siège des Nations Unies à New York, le 19 Septembre. Il a invité le monde entier à observer une minute de silence le 21 septembre à 12 H 00.

A Brazzaville, outre cette matinée spéciale, le Centre d’Information des Nations Unies en partenariat avec la Commission Justice et Paix, la Fédération Universelle pour la Paix, organisera une conférence-débat sur la paix et le développement, mercredi 24 septembre.

Fifty high school teachers participated in a workshop about the Holocaust and the prevention of genocide that was organized by United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Brazzaville on the occasion of International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The workshop was held on 28 January.

The workshop aimed to enhance the ability of the teachers to educate their students on the causes and consequences of genocide, on ways to prevent genocide, and on how to fight against racism, intolerance and exclusion.

The participants heard two presentations, one entitled "Genocides in the 20th Century" and the other entitled "The unique characteristics of the Shoah."  They also watched a screening of a documentary called " Les Justes."

This session on the Holocaust and prevention of genocide was the first one of its kind to be organized in the Republic of the Congo.
