Tanzania commemorates the 14th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda

In commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Dar es Salaam, the Embassy of Rwanda and the University of Dar es Salaam Human Rights Association jointly organized two activities with the theme "Remembering the genocide while fighting against its ideology, rendering assistance to survivors, and focusing on development".

The 7 April 2008 commemoration included a church ceremony and candle-lighting in memory of the victims of the genocide, a musical performance by students from a local public school, and statements by the UN Resident Coordinator, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Tanzania, the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps Group, the Ambassador of Rwanda, and a representative of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The UN Clubs Tanzania Network presented a poem entitled "See through me" and a video entitled "Rwanda Today: Legacies of Genocide" was screened.

On 12 April 2008 an open forum took place at the University of Dar es Salaam with presentations from representatives of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, the University of Dar es Salaam and the ICTR. About 500 students, academics, members of the diplomatic corps, and civil society representatives attended the forum and joined in a lively discussion.

UNIC Dar es Salam celebrates United Nations Day

To celebrate UN Day, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Dar es Salaam organized several events.  They included outreach activities in schools in Dar es Salaam and other cities, a flag-raising ceremony, opening of an exhibition about the UN in Tanzania, and a  voluntary  HIV counseling and testing session.
