Media Encounter for Human Rights Day in UNIC Harare

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Harare commemorated Human Rights Day on Monday 10 December with a media briefing.  The aim of the briefing was to bring together the media, government, civil society and non-governmental organizations to discuss human rights issues.

Speakers at the event included a representative for the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Resident Representative. The UNDP Deputy Representative read the Secretary-General's statement for the Day and launched the beginning of the year-long commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

UNIC Harare reaches out to school students

Educational outreach with primary schools in UNIC Harare

On 23 and 24 November, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Harare visited students in six primary schools in the Midlands province of Gweru, about 300 kilometers south of Harare.  The outreach targeted pupils in grades 5 and 6, aged ten and eleven years.  In these grades the curriculum introduces information about the United Nations in greater detail.  In the seventh grade, the students sit for an examination where the United Nations is one of the topics.

Commemoration of International Youth Day in Harare

On 10 August the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Harare, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Youth Council, the Ministry of Youth Development and various youth groups, commemorated International Youth Day.  The commemoration was held in Mbare, a suburb of Harare. It included a clean-up campaign in the streets of Mbare where the UNIC's Officer-in-Charge and young people took to the streets to sweep and clear the area of dirt.  The young people wore t-shirts displaying the International Youth Day theme: "Be Seen, be heard: Youth Participation for development."

An additional commemoration was held on 12 August.  UNIC's Officer-in-Charge read the Secretary-General's statement to mark the occasion and other speakers included the director of the Zimbabwe Youth Council and the junior president of Zimbabwe.  Various youth groups sang, danced and staged a play on the Youth Day theme.  Also present at this event was the Secretary General of the World Assembly of Youth.

UNIC Harare distributes publications at Zimbabwe International Book Fair

Zimbabwe International Book Fair in UNIC Harare

The Zimbabwe International Book Fair was held in Harare on 2-4 August. Two United Nations offices, namely the the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Harare and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), were among the 84 exhibitors that participated in the book fair.  The UNIC had a film tent and screened videos from various United Nations agencies and both the UNIC and UNDP had a pavillion where publications were available for visitors. Some of the publications UNIC Harare distributed at the fair include "Basic Facts About the United Nations", "the Charter of the United Nations", and "the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."  

More than 2 500 people attended the Zimbabwe International Book Fair and about seventy-five percent of them visited the United Nations pavilion.  These included international and local publishers, booksellers, writers, librarians, school-teachers, headmasters, students, researchers, civic leaders, government officials, and the general public.
