UN Secretary-General interacts with children on Al Jazeera Children's Channel

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Manama arranged for the appearance of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Qatar-based Al Jazeera Children's Channel. The programme, which was broadcast on 1 December 2008, was 30 minutes in length and allowed the Secretary-General to interact with dozens of children from different parts of the world. The Secretary-General also discussed the need for tolerance, knowledge-focused education and the role of the United Nations in the issue of children in conflict.

Heads of UN agencies, Government officials, media and NGOs discuss the work of the UN in Bahrain

On 23 October government officials, diplomats and representatives of non-governmental organizations, the media and the UN System gathered at the UN House in Manama to celebrate United Nations Day. Speakers included the State Minister of Foreign Affairs who highlighted the increasingly crucial role of the UN in aiding communities affected by natural disasters, economic crises and armed conflicts. Guests viewed the Secretary-General's video message and a film about the work and achievements of the UN and received a press kit prepared by United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Manama containing information about the work of the UN System in Bahrain.

Campaign to end violence against women in Bahrain

Launch of campaign to end violence against women in Bahrain.

In an immediate response to the Secretary-General's world wide campaign to end violence against women, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Manama lead the UN Communication Group (UNCG) and all UN agencies in the launch of a campaign to end violence against women in Bahrain.

The launch took place on 26 February and participants included the Resident Coordinator for Bahrain, the Director of UNIC Manama, the Secretary-General of Bahrain Supreme Council of Women, the President of The Shelter For Women Victims of Violence in Bahrain, the Deputy Chairperson of Bahrain's Jurists League, the Head of Women's National Union, the Head of Bahrain’s business women’s Association, representatives of an array of non-governmental organizations and UN agencies and media professionals.

Celebration of United Nations Day in UNIC Manama

Bahrain’s Prime Minister Shaikha Khalifa invited the Director of UNIC Manama on UN Day

On the eve of UN Day, Bahrain’s Prime Minister met with the Director of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Manama and expressed his gratitude to the United Nations.  The meeting was covered by several newspapers and interviews were given by the UNIC Director to electronic media.

Fifty young artists who painted under the leadership of Bahrain's famous painter Abbas Mussawi during International Day of Peace exhibited their paintings at the UN House.  Bahrain TV devoted a talk-show to the UN’s work in the region and worldwide, with a focus on climate change.  Supplements on the role of the UN in the country were published by leading newspapers.
