In keeping with the spirit of World Environment Day, staff from UN agencies operating in Tunisia, as well as staff of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Tunis, gathered at the Africa Hotel in Tunis on 10 June 2009 for a briefing about climate change and how to deal with its effects. Mr. Labbane Iyadh, president of Changement Climatique et Développement Durable and Mr. Nejib Osman, director at the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME), spoke to the participants, moderated the session and responded to staff inquiries. The information discussed at the briefing will be used to develop a joint programme on climate change.

On 29 May 2009, the United Nations Association of Tunisia (ATNU) held a conference and exhibit in Carthage to pay tribute to Tunisia's contribution to UN peacekeeping operations. Participants included representatives of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Tunis, representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the National Defence Ministry, national army field officers, experts in international law, representatives of the diplomatic corps and non-governmental offices (NGOs) in Tunis as well as former Tunisian ministers and ambassadors.

The chairman of ATNU, Ali Hachani, opened the conference by talking about the role of the United Nations Association, which was to communicate the work of the United Nations in the service of peace to members of civil society.

UNIC Tunis' National Information Officer read the message of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Ban said in his message that 113,000 military, police officers and civilians are today deployed under the banner of the United Nations to see to peacekeeping. In 2009, he added, the theme of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was "Women in Peacekeeping: The Power to Empower", to encourage the presence of women in peacekeeping and peace missions.   

The Director General of the Foreign Ministry discussed Tunisia's contributions to UN peacekeeping operations and pointed out that Tunisia's contributions demonstrate Tunisia's commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations.

The conference was preceded by the screening of a film illustrating Tunisian participation in various peacekeeping operations throughout the world, highlighting the participation of women in several of the operations.

On 20 October the UN System in Tunisia organized an exhibit at the Maison de la Culture Ibn Khaldoun, Tunis to commemorate United Nations Day. The exhibit, entitled "192 Children's Views of the World," consisted of a selection of drawings by children, each representing a United Nations Member State and showed how today's children perceive the world in which they live. The drawing project was originally developed to celebrate International Youth Day 2008 and was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations and GenevaWorld, a Swiss cultural association promoting dialogue between countries.

UNIC Tunis presents the Cyberschoolbus website "Ask the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon"

On 30 January, within the framework of the campaign of the UN web site Cyberschoolbus "Ask the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon," United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Tunis invited a group of students to the headquarters of the national organization of Tunisian students.  The Centre’s official, Amor Nekhili, explained the purpose of "Ask the Secretary-General" and invited them to submit their questions about the activities of the United Nations and the role of the Secretary-General.  The students addressed various subjects such as women's rights, the situation in the Middle East and the function and the mandate of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.  The answers of the Secretary-General to the selected questions will be posted on the Cyberschoolbus website and the UNIC's website.
