UN Day Celebrated in Libya

To commemorate the 64th Anniversary of the United Nations, over the period of 22 – 29 October 2009, the UN Country Team in Libya organized a series of activities for the UN Day celebrations.

On 22 October, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Tripoli arranged for a press conference for the Resident Coordinator at UNDP to publicize the UN Day programs and to explore the objectives hold the release of the Human Development Report 2009. UNIC distributed press kits to members of the media.

On 23 October, a charity musical concert was organized by the International Organization of Migration (IOM), Community of Sahel Saharan States (CEN-SAD) and the UN country team at the Great Man Made River Stadium as part of efforts to raise awareness and educate migrant on the dangers of irregular migration. Two musical groups from Ghana and Niger performed a musical program. The audience included diplomats, officials and general public.

In addition, a reception was held at the UN House on 24 October. The Resident Coordinator delivered a speech to diplomats, government officials and members of the media. The program was concluded by a reception and traditional Libyan music and dance program.

On 25 and 26 October, an open house was organized by UNIC on its premises. Each UN agency was allotted space to present their activities through photographs, posters, publications and newspaper clippings.

A number of films and messages on the environment, women and the UN in general were screened.  The Secretary General’s message the occasion and UN publications were distributed among the audience.

A friendly soccer match was organized at the Great Man Made River Stadium in Tripoli between the UN staff and the Embassies staff the evening of 29 October. It was played in a family oriented environment and fun. The UN country team won the match and a trophy by 4 goals.
