16 Days of Activism against Violence on Women in Burundi

To launch the campaign of the "16 Days of Activism Against Violence on Women" and to commemorate the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Burundi co-organized the event with the Ministry of Human Rights and Gender, UNIFEM, the UN Integrated Office in Burundi, international and national NGOs. The ceremonies took place in Mwaro Province on 25 November 2009, under the national theme, “Men and Women, UNiTE to End Volence Against Women”. 

The ceremony started with a march by the local populations with banners containing messages against violence on women, passing in front of the grand stand sheltering the national authorities and the international delegations. Over 3,000 people participated in the march.

The commemoration was hosted by the Minister of Human Rights and Gender and UN Agencies Representatives. Diverse cultural shows including sketches to showcase the different forms of violence against women in Burundi. Traditional dances, poems and songs on the above theme were also displayed.
