UN's 65th birthday celebrated in Brazzaville

As part of the UN’s 65th birthday celebration events, UNIC Brazzaville mounted and hosted a joint UN Agencies exhibition on the theme “Fifty years of the cooperation between the UN and the Republic of Congo” from 19 to 20 October 2010. This activity gathered around 350 visitors. Displayed materials were photos, posters and various UN documents featuring the UNCT support to the government to reach MDGs, address humanitarian and many other challenges in the country and over the world.

The UNIC National Information Officer moderated the opening ceremony which took place in the presence of the State Minister of Justice and Human Rights, the Deputy Secretary General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, FAO, UNESCO and UNICEF Representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, academic community, education institutions, media, civil society and UN staff as well.

Statements were delivered by the Minister and the UNICEF Representative. Stressing the “fruitful cooperation between the UN and the Republic of Congo in the MDGs area”, the Minister said that “this country counts on the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to mobilize the international community to keep its promises”. On behalf of the UN Country Team, the UNICEF Representative was grateful to the government for making easier the UN work in Congo.

During a UN4U briefing

UNIC Brazzaville organized a UN4U outreach programme at the General Leclerc Preparatory Military High School on 22 October 2010 in the capital city. Both the UNIC National Information Officer and the UNICEF Representative presented the “UN4U” lecture to over 200 students. They further participated in the related question-and-answer session.

UNIC and the RC Office arranged for a prerecording and broadcasting of the UN Secretary-General’s message with the assistance of three Television stations.

On 23 October, the UNCT organized an evening party which attended by Ministers, Parliamentarians, Ambassadors, civil society members and the media. The UNIC National Information Officer and the UNHCR Communications Officer co-moderated this activity which was marked by the statements of the UN Resident Coordinator, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education and the Chair person of the UN Staff Association.
