Students in attendance at Museum Africa in Johannesburg

The UN Information Centre (UNIC) Pretoria collaborated with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre (JHGC) to run a programme for high school students at the Museum Africa in Johannesburg.

For the past 5 years, the South African high school students have been studying the Holocaust in their Social Science curriculum.

The theme of this year’s commemoration was “The role of women in the Holocaust” and with this in mind, UNIC arranged for a relevant documentary to be shown at this year’s commemoration.

The Museum Africa, the JHGC and UNIC invited 10 Johannesburg high schools with whom they have partnered in the past by identifying the relevant teachers and informing them of the objective of the programme.

The UNIC National Information Officer, Sudeshan Reddy, was the Programme Director and he gave a background of Holocaust Remembrance Day before delivering the message of the UN Secretary-General.

A film titled “Daring to Resist” was the key focus of this year’s commemoration as it focused on the role of three young Jewish women in different parts of Europe during the Holocaust.

The students then had the opportunity to view two exhibitions in the Museum, one on the Holocaust and one on human rights.
