23 October 2011
In Italy, on 23 October there was an Open Day at the United Nations Campus in Turin with the theme “Your UN: Turin for the UN”. Directors and other representatives of the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and the United Nations System Staff College welcomed visitors inside the gates.
A series of activities took place at the Piemonte Conference Centre, while the largest UN flag in the world was displayed at the entrance to the campus. Activities included:
•Stands run by the main UN institutions, with information material and gadgets for each organization;
•Brief presentations of the UN bodies activities and their work;
•Creative activities in which the public drew or wrote messages for the UN (words and drawings will be collected and sent as an e-publication to UN HQ in New York);
•A panel discussion among the UN organizations’ directors together with the Mayor of Turin and other local personalities;
•A three-way football match: Turin v. UN v. Rest of the World.
In addition, Fabrica – Benetton’s creative branch celebrated UN Day by broadcasting a 2-minute video clip on the MDGs in five of its most prestigious flagship stores, in Shanghai, Barcelona, Munich, Moscow and Milan. In the Piazza del Duomo at the very heart of Milan, the shop windows contained four mega-screens (each of them 3.5 x 5m) where the video was shown in a loop.
