Universal Children's Day Celebrated in Baku

19 November 2011

On November 19 on the occasion of the Universal Children’s Day, which aims at promoting the welfare of children and developing understanding between children all over the world, the United Nations Information Office (UNO) in Azerbaijan in cooperation with the Office of the Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) and the Park Bulvar Entertainment Center, organized an engaging event to bring smiles on children’s faces.  Special attention was drawn to particularly vulnerable categories: children with disabilities, children without parental care and internally displaced/refugee children.

Welcoming the children gathered at the Tusi-Bohm Planetarium just before the “space tour” Ms. Envera Selimovic said: “it is a great day for us all and we feel privileged for the opportunity to celebrate Children’s Day with you.” Underlining the importance of the Universal Children’s Day, Ms. Selimovic said that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future. “Universal Children's Day celebrates children just for being themselves. It reminds us that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It is a day to listen to children, to marvel at their uniqueness,” added Ms. Selimovic.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Rashid Rumzade also emphasized the importance of this day: “Children are our future, and this event is worth celebrating to generate awareness and give special honor to them.” After exciting experiences at the Planetarium all the kids had lunch together. The event was highly attended and covered by local TV stations and media outlets.
