Change is Possible, UNIC New Delhi’s Director tells MUN Delegates

09 December 2011
"The Model United Nations (MUN) experience teaches you that it is possible to put forward your point of view in a reasoned manner," the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in New Delhi’s Director Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman told delegates at the Ecole Mondiale Model UN Conference (EMUN) in Mumbai on 9 December 2011. “It is possible to appeal to basic human values and seek acceptable solutions,” she said. “It is possible to stand up for peace, democracy and human rights.”

EMUN explored a wide range of subjects under the theme ‘Universal Responsibility’ – from the protection of human rights through tolerance and reconciliation, to the availability of micro-credit, and the issue of oil platforms. “The UN has spoken out strongly on these issues,” Ms. Mehra-Kerpelman observed. “The link between tolerance and non-violence, a truly Gandhian prescription, is all too obvious when we just think of the close inter-linkages between intolerance and violence”.
