On 3 August, a special event was held at the Memorial Synagogue on Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow to commemorate the centenary of Raoul Wallenberg’s birth.
The UN Information Centre (UNIC) was invited by the organizers, the Russian Jewish Congress and the Holocaust Centre, to participate in the remembrance ceremony.
In his comments, UNIC Director Alexandre Gorelik quoted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message marking the International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust: “We will continue to be inspired by the shining example of great humanitarians such as Raoul Wallenberg, in this, the centennial year of his birth”.
Profound, thoughtful remarks were made by Professor Ilya Altman, Co-President of the Holocaust Centre, Yuri Kanner, President of the Russian Jewish Congress, diplomats from Embassies of Sweden, Israel, Hungary, Netherlands and Germany.
Additionally, a new documentary dedicated to Mr. Wallenberg’s life and disappearance “A secret story of intelligence services. A solo for lonely owls” was screened.
