UNIC Colombo


Established in 1961, UNIC Colombo is integrated with the United Nations Development Programme in Sri Lanka.

The United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), Services (UNIS) and Offices (UNOs), located in 63 countries worldwide, link the United Nations with people around the world, disseminating global UN messages to local audiences.

The Centres serve as a reliable source of up-to-date information about the UN, delivering information in their respective countries to a wide range of people.

UNIC has had a successful programme to mark the International Day of Eradication of Poverty 2011on last 17th at Kalawana, R/Rambuka Maha Vidyalaya (160 k.m. away from Colombo)

In his message to mark the Day, Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations says that failing to invest in youth is a false economy and investments in young people will pay great dividends in a better future for all.

UN Resident Representative visits North

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Subinay Nandy, arrived in Vavuniya on 18th July 2011 on a two-day mission.

ESCAP survey report 2011

Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2011, the flagship publication of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(ESCAP), was launched in Sri Lanka on Thursday, 05 May with collaboration of ESCAP office in Bangkok. The Launching ceremony was held at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) with a media briefing. More than 40 people were participated. Mr. Douglas Keh, Country Director, UNDP and Director, UNIC a.i. delivered the welcome speech. While Dr. Muhammed Hussain Malik, Economic Affairs Officer of UNESCAP introduced the survey, Dr. Dushni Weerakoon of Institute of Policy Studies, Sri Lanka, and Mr. W.A. Wijewardena, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka made presentations with special focus on Sri Lankan economy. Ms. Hiranthi Gunawardena, Administrative Assistant, UNIC introduced the speakers and gave the vote of thanks.

The following statement was issued 25-04-2011 by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: The United Nations has today made public the advisory report of the Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts on accountability with respect to the final stages of the decades-long armed conflict in Sri Lanka, which was submitted to him on 12 April 2011. The decision to release the report was made as a matter of transparency and in the broader public interest

The panel of experts set up to advise Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on accountability issues with respect to the conflict in Sri Lanka delivered its report on the 12th April to the United Nations chief, who is sharing a copy with the Government prior to making it public.The three-member panel was set up following the Joint Statement made by Mr. Ban and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa after the Secretary-General visited the South Asian nation shortly after the end of the conflict in May 2009.

In Sri Lanka, the UN Gender Theme Group (GTG) in collaboration with the UN Communication Team (UNCT) conducted a media briefing for journalists from printed and electronic media on 24 February 2011 to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD).
