Yangon, Monday 18, February, 2013: The Tatmadaw officially discharged 24 children in a ceremony in Yangon on 15 February, Friday, attended by senior officials of the Tatmadaw, the Representative of UNICEF as co-chair of a UN Country Task Force on children and armed conflict, senior officials from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, Rehabilitation and Resettlement and member agencies of the Country Task Force.

The recent negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) on the conflict in Kachin state is a positive step to enable the UN and its humanitarian partners to respond to the dire needs of the displaced persons who had been suffering since the outbreak of conflict over one and half years ago.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations today received a letter from the President of Myanmar, U Thein Sein.
GENEVA (31 October 2012) – Three United Nations experts on Myanmar, minority issues and internally displaced persons today expressed their deep concern over continuing inter-communal violence in Rakhine State, Myanmar, that has led to loss of life, destruction of homes and mass displacement, and called on the Government to urgently address the underlying causes of the tension and conflict between the Buddhists and Muslim communities in the region.
A United Nations team led by the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam, returned today from a visit to Rakhine State accompanying the Union Minister for Border Affairs, Lt. General Thein Htay.
“It is vital for the Government and all concerned to prevent further violence and to defuse tensions between the two communities,” Mr. Ojea Quintana said, presenting his report* on the situation of human rights in Myanmar to the UN General Assembly, which considers among other things the situation in Rakhine State, where violence between communities has left scores dead, over 850 people detained and tens of thousands displaced.
The most recent outbreak of communal violence in five townships in Northern Rakhine is deeply troubling. The widening mistrust between the communities is being exploited by militant and criminal elements to cause large-scale loss of human lives, material destruction, displaced families as well as fear, humiliation and hatred affecting the people from all walks of life.

14 August - The recent mission of the Turkish Foreign Minister and senior officials of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to Myanmar’s state of Rakhine – which recently experienced deadly ethnic clashes that displaced thousands of people – was welcomed today by the top United Nations envoy to the Southeast Asian country.
(Yangon/New York, 9 August 2012) Ending a four-day mission to Myanmar, John Ging, OCHA’s Director of Operations, voiced concern for the plight of over half a million internally displaced people and called for respect for humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law to enable aid agencies to access areas of conflict and help those in need.

Myanmar is vulnerable to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. The worst natural disaster, Cyclone Nargis, struck Myanmar on 2 and 3 May 2008. 140,000 people lost their lives and 2.4 million people were severely affected.
YANGON, 27 June 2012 – The Government of Myanmar and the United Nations today signed an action plan to prevent the recruitment and use of children by the Myanmar armed forces – the Tatmadaw – and allow for the release of under-age recruits.
Yangon 15 June 2012 - A United Nations team led by Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General and Mr. Ashok Nigam, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, visited Maungdaw, in Rakhine State on 13-14 June. Mr. Nambiar was in Myanmar for the Peace Donor Support Group meeting. On 8 June, serious disturbances occurred in Rakhine State which led to the Government declaring a state of emergency in the State. The UN also temporarily relocated, on a voluntary basis, some of its staff that were based in Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Sittwe.

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar, 30 April—At the invitation of the Government of Myanmar, the United Nations will provide technical assistance and help mobilize financial support for the country’s first census in 31 years, under an agreement signed today in the nation’s capital. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Myanmar’s Vice President Sai Mauk Kham witnessed an exchange of letters signed by their representatives, setting out principles for conducting the proposed 2014 population and housing census in accordance with international standards.

United Nations convoys carrying emergency relief supplies to internally displaced people (IDPs) in two locations affected by the conflict in Kachin State have now returned to base after distributing these items in the IDP camps.

Multi-sector collaboration and partnership approach required to reach programme targets
Yangon, 1 June 2011 — Over 120 officials, development partners and civil society representatives, including high ranking representatives of government and UN met in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, to launch the National Strategic Plan (NSP) for AIDS covering the years 2011 to 2015. The Multi-Sector Workshop, hosted by the Ministry of Health was the first in a series of such workshop to be organized in different state and region in the country to raise awareness of the targets and priority HIV interventions defined in the new plan.

UNDP Myanmar, Yangon, 3 May 2011 – Dr. Ajay Chhibber, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Assistant Administrator met with the new Government in Nay Pyi Taw and other key stakeholders to discuss UNDP’s new programme (2012-2015) and review its current activities.
This report takes stock of six months of relief and recovery assistance provided by the humanitarian community, in
partnership with the Government of Myanmar, following Cyclone Giri, which made landfall in the western coast of
Myanmar’s Rakhine State on 22 October 2010.
Office of the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, Yangon, 26 April 2011 – The response to Cyclone Giri, which struck Myanmar’s Rakhine State on 22 October last year, was swift and helped meet the basic needs of many of the estimated 260,000 people affected by the disaster, according to a report presented today at the Myanmar Humanitarian Partnership Group meeting, a monthly meeting in Yangon attended by donors, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations and other members of the humanitarian community in Myanmar.

Yangon, 27 January ---- Additional assistance is needed to support early recovery efforts in areas affected by Cyclone Giri, which struck Myanmar’s Rakhine State on 22 October. Three months on, key challenges facing the affected communities include inadequate shelter, damaged crop and embankments, food insecurity and indebtedness due to loss of income opportunities, according to recent assessments carried out jointly by UN agencies and non-governmental organizations operating in the areas.

New UNFPA Report Links Peace, Security and Development to Women’s Rights and Empowerment
29 October 2010 Yangon, Myanmar - The Launching Ceremony of The State of World Population 2010 Report was organized by UNFPA today at the Sedona Hotel, Yangon. The ceremony was attended by more than 60 participants consisting of representatives from embassies, donor agencies, UN agencies, government departments, NGOs/INGOs, and civil societies.
When women have access to the same rights and opportunities as men, they are more resilient to conflict and disaster and can lead reconstruction and renewal efforts in their societies, according to The State of World Population 2010, published by UNFPA.
UN agencies and international and national non-governmental organizations present in Myanmar are mobilizing aid and deploying assessment teams following the Category 4 Cyclonic Storm, which made landfall in Rakhine State on 22 October.
